The associations and his objectives.
The association
ASEDEME - The Senegalese Association for the Protection of Mentally Retarded Children was established in 1989 by parents who were determined to bring these ‘different’ children out of obscurity.
The objective was to provide a suitable educational environment for the children. Since there was no facility providing care and support for mentally retarded children in Senegal at that time, the association decided to build by itself a special psycho-pedagogical center in order to address this issue in a concrete and practical way.
The associations objectives
ASEDEME is pursuing three major objectives :
- Meeting and training families, raising people’s awareness about mental retardation ;
- Diagnosing and developing treatment plans for the mentally retarded children ;
- Providing suitable vocational training to ensure children’s future access to jobs.
